DaW: Carrie Chatterson Studio & Work-Shop
CARRIE CHATTERSON STUDIO
It was so great to visit and chat with the team at Carrie Chatterson Studio, the design team behind our very own “Design Is Rhode Island” brand! Carrie Chatterson was also the Creative Director/Designer of DESIGN IS, a brand new magazine produced by DESIGNxRI to build off of “Design Is Rhode Island.” You can read more about DESIGN IS below… but first, here are some thoughts from Carrie!
What is Carrie Chatterson Studio (CC:S)?
CC:S is a boutique design studio in North Kingstown, RI with a satellite office in NYC. We work with nonprofit organizations and innovative companies on visual identity, print, digital and environmental design projects.
Select clients include: Tenement Museum, ACLU, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, Newport Restoration Foundation, Parrish Art Museum, and Dorothea Dix Park.
What are your design influences?
We are influenced by European graphic design, specifically Dutch and German design. We also look at contemporary art, architecture and patterns (digital and in nature) for inspiration.
What about Rhode Island makes you stay as a designer? What about RI inspires you to design here?
I started CC:S in 2005 in New York City and after 16 years, my husband and I decided to move out of the city to reconnect with nature, focus on a higher quality of life, and raise our two boys. We chose southern Rhode Island for our home and studio because of its close proximity to NYC, Providence and Boston. The quiet "country" life allows the space to focus on our work without any distractions and we can get to an urban center when needed for that jolt of energy. Since moving here in 2014, we have connected with many designers in RI and now have a team of 4 designers working at the studio in North Kingstown. Our client base has doubled since moving to RI and they can be found all along the East Coast and California.
What other RI designers inspire you and why?
We've discovered many awesome designers in RI since moving here. Three of our faves are:
J. Schatz -- we love their bold, minimal decorative objects.
Loft -- we're inspired by their innovative solutions for product design and applications.
RA HA Jewelry - we are obsessed with Julia's earrings -- works for art!

Work-Shop is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Providence-RI. They design branding, digital products, interiors, furniture, experiences, and everything in between!
The studio was started 6 years ago by the co-founders Greg Nemes and Nic Schumann. Their goal at Work-Shop is to work with clients to understand their goals, challenges, and needs, then create really good design that solves problems. Integrating brand, digital, interior, and experience design, Greg and Nic aim to create cohesive and impactful results that propel organizations forward.
Their client base ranges from a wide variety of RI-based small businesses and non-profit organizations to global institutions including the Smithsonian Institution, Harvard, MIT, and Brown.
WHY RHODE ISLAND? “Rhode Island is a great place to live and work as a designer. There are a lot of amazing opportunities to work together with fantastic organizations and create a lot of impact. That’s why we choose to work here.” - Nic Schumann, Work-Shop
